What will happen if the oil runs out tomorrow…
Part of me really wants to see what would become of us if this did happen, but another side just tells me that it’s going to be on the darker side of some apocolypic Hollywood movie!
Lets have a think about what some of the immediate and longer term outcomes will be.
For starters, unless the governments all of a sudden magic some wonder fuel out from under it’s hat that they’ve been suppressing for years (lets face it with the amount of tax a government makes on fuel this might even happen) it’s all going to get very hairy, very quickly.
For starters the most basic of human needs.. Food, its going to become very scarce. Not only getting the food to market, but the mass production of it and the farming of it, is all reliant on oil.
So what do we have to do? provide for ourselves? that might actually be an option if your in a more rural location, but what about the people who are living in overcrowded conurbations? These people are going to go crazy, starve, migrate, implode REAL quick!
Policing is only going to last so long, days weeks at most, before they run out of stocked fuel, ammunition, tools, that will allow them to keep the peace before all out chaos reigns.
From here, we’ve got people defending what they’ve got, vigilantes running around toting guns deputising themselves as sheriffs of the street.
We only need to go back to circa 1850’s when we survived without mass use of oil, but the panic and social short comings of today’s society aren’t going to simply allow us to go back to an existence like that straight away.
People will pillage, fight, and kill for what they can. Infections, famine and murder will greatly reduce the world’s population, where we enter a survival of the fittest. Once we get out of what could be years of chaos will the world start to become at one with its self once more.
People are going to have to go about working for food. The biggest industries will be those that can commercially produce foods like single cell proteins (Mycoprotein AKA Quorn) and get the product to market.
Localisation will be key to survival. Communities of people working as one, self supporting with electricity, raising livestock, farming crops, entertainment will start to become a key cornerstone of successful communities. Co-operatives that can give a balanced approach to life will flourish. Socialisation will breed comradery and tight knit local communities. The ‘Parish’ view will become the centre of focus once more, with travelling modern day bards and poets making there way through societies spreading word of hyper local developments.
The most successful Hyper local environments will become model c-operatives, propagating the successful communities working practices (Farming, Electricity, manufacturing etc) will allow civilisations to witness the second coming of the industrial revolution where operations are taken national again, the age of ALL ELECTRIC!
We could carry on waiting for this to happen or we could make greater steps to go all electric as soon as possible.
Someone needs to start taking Meyers work to the next level! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Meyer’s_water_fuel_cell
Like I started this article, I’d quite like to see civilization flatten itself for the good of itself, but let face it, it sounds like a much bigger ball ache than doing something about it now.
